University of São Paulo- Resilience in Affordable Design: Post Disaster Solutions at Community Levels

Many communities across the globe are facing serious environmental problems. Without drastic changes, we are facing imminent danger to the places that we call home. Not only that, but residents of these communities need to address affordable and resilient housing for all its members. “APIS”, the scientific name for the bee, is a tribute to and a call for collaboration. Starting in 2010, professors and students at the University of Sao Paulo along with Eldorado community leaders and residents have been working together to address post-flood related issues. The university has begun to design and build temporary and portable ablution blocks for public use in post-disaster situations. The materials chosen are unique to the problem and needs of the community: they are readily and locally available, light-weight, affordable, durable, water/ mold resistant and contribute to the economic resilience of the area. This project also aims to train local community members in the production of these buildings, therefore contributing to the community in the future. This presentation will look at all aspects involved in the project design and implementation within the community it serves.
