In 2013, U.S. President Obama launched the program 100,000 Strong in the Americas, whose goal is to increase the number of exchange students between the United States and other countries of the Western Hemisphere to 100,000 in each direction, by 2020. In order to help the implementation of projects for student exchange, the Innovation Fund was established as a partnership between the U.S. Department of State, Partners of the Americas and NAFSA.

We present the experience of a project funded by the Innovation Fund, carried out by the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV, Brazil) together with 5 American universities. The goal is to encourage and help other institutions to submit new proposals to the Innovation Fund. We discuss details about the submission process and strategies to build a strong proposal. As an example, we present the activities developed at UFV and the results achieved.
