Nowadays, Portuguese as Foreign Language (PFL) has reached the status of world language and this is due to the social, economic, political and cultural role Portuguese speaking countries, mainly Brazil, are playing in the international scenario. The inclusion of Brazil among the BRIC countries has contributed to the positive impact of Portuguese throughout the world. Currently, there are eight countries where Portuguese is the official language and 244 million people speaking Portuguese. There are more than 200 million Portuguese speakers in the world and everyday more and more people around the world want to learn it as a foreign language. Taking into consideration that the association of education and technology generates digital tools for online teaching, a research on the teaching of PFL (Portuguese as a foreign language) via UNESP MOODLE platform was carried on and a pilot course was developed and offered in 2015. Also, the use of the course book My Portuguese Lab (MPL) was tested in an online classroom group, as resource online tool. This paper presents the results of the association between technology and language teaching by showing some theoretical studies about the MOODLE platform, language teaching and PFL teaching. The main objectives were: a) to evaluate the MOODLE platform and the MPL as effective ways for PFL online teaching; b) to create an online course to help students develop and improve Portuguese language competence. The research, which is still in progress, has proved, so far, that a course on Portuguese as foreign language on-line can be interactive, communicative, collaborative, and effective therefore, successful!
