Examples of Initiatives in two universities (Ireland and Mexico) to foster Global Citizenship and Social Responsibility within the University communities, strengthening both Internationalization at Home and the development of sustainable international partnerships.

An international association, the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities, will also join the session to give an overview of their work to support and foster such initiatives globally.

University College Cork (UCC) is one of the largest public universities in Ireland and has developed various initiatives to foster global citizenship and internationalization at home throughout the UCC community. Examples include campus wide education on global issues and sustainability, featuring sessions on Latin America; a Centre for Marginalized and Endangered Worldviews which has specific expertise on Brazil; The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies offers modules that focus on human rights work within the Americas; a Center for Criminal Justice and Human Rights with projects on Latin America including Guatemala and El Salvador.

UCC has also developed sustainable partnerships in Latin America through Erasmus Mundus Programmes, including MITRA (focusing on issues of mobility, intercultural mediation, conflict and identity) AMIDILA (Academic Mobility for the Inclusive Development of Latin America) and Agris Mundus (Sustainable Development in Agriculture).

Established in September 2005, The Talloires Network is an international association of institutions committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. The Talloires Network believes that higher education institutions exist neither in isolation from society, nor from the communities in which they are located. It envisions universities around the world as vibrant and dynamic forces in their communities, incorporating civic engagement and community service into their research and teaching missions. It envisions its students as global citizens, responsive and active in their communities, aware of the societal and political problems around the world.

Now in its tenth year, the Network has 350 engaged universities in 76 countries that all graduate global students and professionals. Among the network, we see members employing a variety of strategies in tackling and making obsolete the notion that being “of service” is an add-on, a supplement to the established curriculum, and instead elevating the University to the role of leader in addressing global challenges. Some of the challenges that will be discussed include:

• Working with university leadership in different contexts;
• Strategies to elevate the importance of service learning and civic engagement for the wellbeing of the university, students and community;
• Impact on the community and university.

Universidad Veracruzana (UV) is one of the largest public universities in Mexico, distributed throughout the state of Veracruz in 5 regional campuses and has been internationally recognised for its social responsibility. UV community works closely with public and productive sectors and carries out engagement work in disadvantaged communities throughout the state. UV provides higher education to indigenous students that respects their linguistic and cultural identities; fosters sustainable development and global citizenship.

UV has gained international recognition, shared best practices and developed sustainable partnerships internationally with the Talloires Network, an International Association of Engaged Universities. The Talloires Network (TN) has recognised UV’s work, provided a platform to share best practices through programmes including the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship; TN Mastercard Foundation Youth Economic Participation Initiative (YEPI) and the TN University Volunteer Program, where UV students have had the opportunity to share their experience in community engagement and learn at partner universities in Columbia, Peru, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong.
