Widening Access to Quality Education Globally for the Less Advantaged

Over the past 153 years, the University of London has been opening access to its quality education to students who are, physically or financially unable to come to London to study. Currently there are over 54,000 students studying University of London programmes in over 180 countries. Among its alumni who studied away from University of London campuses, 7 have won Nobel Prizes, including Nelson Mandela.

This was achieved largely by creating affordable and flexible programmes and by working closely with a network of 150 partnering institutions located in 50 countries.

This paper will discuss this innovative and sustainable model, together with the past and current challenges faced by the University of London.
