Italian Universities and academic cooperation with Brasil: lessons learnt from Science without Borders

The aim of our contribution is to focus on the Italian Universities and the Brazilian higher education frameworks, the structures and internationalization strategies in Europe and Brazil and the impact of the Science without Borders programme on the Italian Universities.
The presentation will start with a review of mobility tools, good practices and procedures used within the SwB programme among the Italian Universities and the Brazilian Government. A specific attention will be given to similarities and differences between SwB and other mobility programs, and between the practices adopted in Italy and in other European countries. Moreover, thanks to the results of a survey conducted among the network of 25 Italian universities that participated to SwB, we will identify how Italian institutions tackled the main challenges of the SwB programme.
In fact, the creation of a national network of universities was a peculiarity of the Italian experience since the beginning of the SwB programme. The group was a great opportunity to share practices and to achieve the objective of consolidating and expanding international scientific collaboration through exchanges and mobility at different levels.
The last part of the paper will focus on the impact of the SwB programme in the Italian Universities in terms of quality of the mobility, implementation of new joint programmes in education and research, new strategic partnerships and international agreements, consolidation of research groups, etc with Brazilian institutions. Also this part will benefit from the data gathered through the survey and will focus also on the internship experiences that many Brazilian students did during their stay in Italy.
Thanks to SwB, the network of Italian universities who participated can count now on a scheme to create better synergies between Brazilian and Italian universities, also at multilateral level, and a tool to strengthen Italian and EU policy dialogue with Brazil for academic cooperation projects and activities.
