EMI: Some practical considerations II
Saturday, 16 April 2016
13:30 - 16:30
Salas 9-10
This workshop aims to move behond theory to help participants optimize the successful
implentation of EMI in their home institutions. The first part of the workshop will focus on
common challenges that one faces when implementing (or trying to implement) EMI programs in
higher education insititutions, and when running such programs. Rather than focus on EMI
courses alone, the workshop will encourage participants to consider the impact of EMI on the
broader "ecosystem" of the university, including teaching faculty (both EMI and non-EMI),
student body (both EMI and non-EMI), and administrative staff -- and the potential challenges
associated with each of those parties.
The second phase will build on the challenges discussed to focus on strategies to overcome those
challenges. For example, what are some ways that the additional burden of preparing EMI
lectures (in addition to Portuguese-language classes) can be reduced%3F And what sort of teaching
methods are conducive to increasing the comprehension among EMI students%3F Such questions
will be taken on in this workshop in a very hands-on fashion, supported by real examples and
contributions from the workshop participants themselves.
In the third and final phase of the workshop, participants will work in breakout groups to focus on
a particular problem and come up with a srrategy to deal with that problem and present it to the
whole workshop group when it reconvenes.
Suggestions for further reading and support will be provided.
