Tuesday, 28 April 2015
09:00 - 10:30
Auditório das Borboletas
Chair: Vitor Amaral, UFRJ/FAUBAI
Julie Dearden, Department of Education, University of Oxford
The lecture will depict an academic research about English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) conducted by the Oxford University Department of Education with the support of the British Council. The study covers 55 countries in an attempt to map the size and shape of EMI in the world today. English is increasingly being used to teach other academic subjects such as science, mathematics, history and medicine at both university and secondary school levels, but yet there is very little research into the topic. This talk gives a bird's eye view of EMI and raises some of the issues involved when teaching an academic subject though English.
