LIT (Ireland) and UFSJ (Brasil) international 3rd level education research collaboration (Science Ph. D student)

At Limerick Institute of Technology Ireland extensive research has been carried out to determine if fungi from Ireland produce bioactive compounds with commercial application, largely focusing on industrial and healthcare implementation. A major finding of a Ph. D fellow at LIT, identified a number of fungi capable of degrading the environmentally harmful and commercially relevant textile dye named reactive Black 5.
Although this environmentally friendly application is very relevant on a world wide scale, Ireland does not have a significant textile manufacturing industry to apply this technology.
The textile and garment industry is the second largest employer in Brasil, making Brasil the 4th largest exporter in the world of such textiles. In addition, many textiles are manufactured for domestic use in Brasil. Similar to Ireland, Brasil is considered a hot-spot for fungal investigations for commercial applications as much of the country is under explored.
In collaboration the LIT (Ireland) and UFSJ (Brasil) International Offices, with the support of The Erasmus Programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) an international post graduate student research collaboration was developed. The collaboration between LIT and UFSJ opened new possibilities for research for both parties. A science Ph. D student (Martin Hayes) travelled to UFSJ to continue his research. This allowed for the transfer of scientific knowledge and techniques between laboratories, access to previously under-explored habitats for sampling fungi and access to industrial textile waste from the city of Divinópolis (one of the most important industrial centers in Minas Gerais, containing many textile mills and garment manufacturers). This collaboration allowed for the identification of natural pollution control measures for the degradation of textile waste from a real industrial system. In addition, the collaborates aim to publish a scientific research article from the work carried out during the collaboration.
