Implementing and assessing sustainable strategic partnerships – Perspectives from Brazil, Germany and the UK

n their daily business, virtually every university worldwide deals with a large number of partner institutions around the globe. As questions of quality, value and impact arise, many universities are now at a point where they would like to go beyond sheer expansion of contacts and become more strategic in their choice of partners, but want to measure and consequently improve the quality of their partnerships to ensure sustainability and good outcomes. How do we measure the value of international partnerships? What can we do to make successful partnerships work? What are good examples for cooperation forms that last? And what is needed to communicate the value of partnerships internally?

During this session, examples of three universities will be used to explore this issue: King’s College London and the Universidade de São Paulo will showcase good practice examples on creating internal networks, mapping existing activity, identifying key measures of success, and supporting frameworks, such as dual/joint degrees. New forms of cooperation and the usefulness of established ones will be discussed. In addition, Freie Universität Berlin will give an example of using data to assess and advance its internationalization agenda, using the evaluation of its liaison offices abroad as an example. The lessons learned from it might be helpful for other universities to create ways of assessing the impact of partnerships.
